Self-Guided Walking Holidays La Serrella

   Overview
 La Serrella  7 Days / 6 Nights  Grade B/C: Trails / Mountains

The Costa Blanca is well known for its sunny coastline and warm year-round climate. Perhaps less well known, except to those lucky few, is the interior of this part of the province of Alicante. But waiting to be discovered is a wonderful interior of limestone massifs with hidden Moorish villages and an abundant landscape of mediterranean vegetation.

This walking holiday is available all year round but is particularly scenic in the early springtime when the almond orchards are in full bloom. But whatever time you walk here, you can experience the pleasures of the warm mediterranean climate and the delight of seeing the many moorish castles and ancient Aragonese fortresses. Hiking through orange, loquat and of course almond orchards you follow rural tracks and trails to ascend to the rocky limestone formations and impressive views of the likes of the Barranco del Riu Negre and citadel of El Castellet.

Your accommodation on this tour is a mix of classic local guesthouses and rural hotels. With dinners and breakfasts included all you need do is ask why you have not yet visited this delightful part of Spain and experienced the beauty of walking the almond orchards of País Valencià.

   Itinerary
Callosa d'en Sarria

Day 1 (Arrival)
Arrive in our base in the town of Callosa d'en Sarria, about 10km inland of the Mediterranean Sea and at the foothills of the Sierra de Aixorta. The moorish town of Callosa d'en Sarria can be easily reached by the hourly bus service from Benidorm.

Day 2 (15km Bolulla to Castell de Castells)
After a morning transfer to Bolulla you follow steep paths to climb through the rock formations of the Barranco del Riu Negre. This is a local route once used by the postal service but now takes you from the low lying orchards around Bolulla to the village of Castells. Passing pine groves and olive and almond orchards you descend to our base in Castell de Castells.

Day 3 (11km or 17km Aixorta Circular)
You have a choice today of an easier walk in the foothills of the Aixorta Range or optionally a longer walk with and ascent of the peak of Mallá del Llop (1357m). You trek along animal trails to the ancient citadel of El Castellet, situated at 1050m. From here you have marvellous views of the Guadalest dam and all the surrounding villages in all directions before returning to base.

Pla de la CasaDay 4 (14km Castell de Castells to Benimassot)
After the hills of yesterday you have an easier walk today through low-lying orchards and easy countryside as you meander along valley floors. Passing through the gardens of the quiet villages of Famorca and Fachega you continue north-west to the hamlet of Benimassot and your accommodation tonight.

Day 5 (12km or 22km Benimassot Peaks)
You can either elect to have an easy half-day of walking to the Pica Cantacuc or opt for the more challenging walk to the summit of Pla de la Casa at 1355m. In either case your day of walking will return you to our rural hotel here in Benimassot.

Day 6 (9km Els Arcs)
Your final day of your walking holiday follows a lovely route from Quatretondeta up through the fabulous El Arcs rock formations. You then continue to ascend to Mas de la Canaleta, situated 900 metres high with wonderful views across the countryside, down to the village of Confrides. You return at the end of the day to our original base in Callosa d'en Sarria.

Day 7 (Departure)La Serrella almond orchards
The tour is completed following your breakfast. If you are returning home later in the day you may just have time to visit the famous waterfalls here at the Font de L'Algar botanical garden.
