Arrive in our base in the town of Valldemossa, home to Carthusian
monastery around which the town is built. The town of Valldemossa
can be easily reached by public bus from Palma de Mallorca.
This is an easy day walk to get your legs under you. You follow
the horse-riding trail of Archduke Ludwig Salvador which provides
you wonderful views over the Mediterranean Sea along the way.
If you are feeling energetic there is the option to extend the
walk with an ascent to Es Teix peak (at 1062m).
A short transfer brings you to artists colony of Deia where you
start to walk along the coastline. You walk through an ancient
Mediterranean woodland of oak, pine and the 'Strawberry Tree'
or madrone. You continue on the trail through private orange
estates as you head on to the coastal town of Puerto Soller and
its famous old tramway.
After a short transfer by tram to Soller you enjoy a walk today through the hills of the Serra de Tramuntana
range. Today therefore provides you with the opportunity in the
morning to enjoy the rugged (and quieter) Mediterranean coast
here in western Mallorca or to visit the old town centre of Soller
and shop for Mallorquin delicacies. Heading off on your walk
ascends gradually through citrus trees and into the hills and the rural hamlet of Balitx d'Avall. You continue down to
follow the coastline and on to Cala Tuent, a summer village with a picturesque beach.
From the port of Soller, you have a steep ascent to the cliffs which form a natural
breakwater overlooking the bay. From the cliffs you have lovely views from the old watchtower (Torre Picada)
along the rocky coastline to the tiny island of S'Illeta. From your highpoint, you then have a steep
descent along a ravine to reach teh promontory at Sa Punta Llarga.
You head off this morning along the 'orange
valley' and head deep into the Serra de Tramuntana. Today's walk
involves a fair amount of ascent and leads you right across the
Tramuntana range. Heading up along part of the GR221 you pass
the Torrent d'Almedra on your way to the col before descending
to Orient's hidden and lush valley - home to some of the best
apples and cherries on the island.
Our final day's walking brings you to the centre of the island
- atop the impressive Alaró mountain (822m) where you are rewarded
with magnificent views over Mallorca as far as the Palma and
Alcúdia bays. It
is also the location of the Alaró castle - an ancient fortification
dating back to the Moors. You return to our base for the evening.
