Self-Guided Walking Holidays Sierra Nevada

   Overview
 Sierra Nevada  7 Days / 6 Nights  Grade B/C: Hills/Mountains
Another of our walking holidays in Andalucia - this one is based in the Western Alpujarras. This mountainous area of Spain still recalls its Moorish past - and in many places the Arabic legacy remains to charm the visitor in the many white-washed Alpujarran villages which dot this beautiful landscape.

Your itinerary brings you through olive orchards and past orange and almond groves as you explore the terraced hillsides and steep gorges of this varied landscape. And as you hike through the diverse Mediterranean vegetation, in the background lie the snowy peaks of the high Sierras and majestic Mulhacén.

This part of Spain lies just south of Granada and can also be easily reached from Almeria and Malaga. So why wait? Book a walking holiday in Andalucia and experience the warmth and history of Spain!

   Itinerary

Day 1 (Arrival)
Arrive in the village of Capileira situated on the southern slopes of the Alpujarras at a height of 1436 metres. Capileira is one of the primary villages of the Alpujarras and still displays the characteristics of a former Moorish settlement: white-washed houses clinging to the hillsides, tiny squares with many fountains, and the seemingly mysterious network of steep, narrow lanes and streets.

Day 2 (The Río Poqueira Valley )
Today you follow a circular route which heads out from Capileira to take in the villages of Bubion to Pampaneira as you explore the Río Poqueira valley. This is a mixed day of steep ascents and descents as you walk through the hillsides, fields and orchards - passing some eras (ancient threshing circles). Return to Capileira and your stay this evening.

Day 3 (Capileira to Pórtugos)
Leaving your accommodation you follow the trail through ancient Mediterranean Holm Oak forest to Bubion. Continuing on through a mix of forestation and irrigated fields you you reach the Taha de Pitres - an ancient water council centre which dates back to Moorish times. Your walk brings you through the villages of Bubion, Pitres, Mencina-Fondales and Atalbéitar before finishing in Pórtugos for the evening.

Day 4 (Pórtugos to Trevélez)
Today you have a longer walk along the higher slopes of the river valley to Trevélez. You stay mainly on a long-distance path which affords wonderful views across the valleys. An easy descent brings you to the town of Trevélez - the highest village in the Alpujarras with its curious mix of tiny streets and large ham curing businesses.

Day 5 (Trevélez circulars)
You stay in the environs of Trevélez today and can choose from a variety of different walks. We offer a shorter walk along the Camino de Granada, a circular route in the area around Trevélez itself, or a spectacular longer walk high into the Sierra Nevada themselves.

Day 6 (Trevélez to Bérchules)
Leaving Trevélez you head along the GR7 to follow small wooded paths below Peñabón before ascending to the high point for today at El Portichuelo. On clear days you can see beyond the barrancos and the last of the Sierra's to the Mediterranean Sea and even to the coast of Africa. A steady descent then takes you down to the village of Bérchules.

Day 7 (Bérchules circular / departure)
The standard tour arrangement normally ends with you catching the afternoon bus to Granada. This means you can have a short walk this morning along an an acequia (irrigation channel) in the Río Grande valley. Alternatively if you book another night in your hotel in Bérchules you can enjoy a beautiful walk which brings you straight the far side of the valley from the hotel and then you can follow a beautiful circuit via Cerro Gordo and along the gorge back down to Bérchules.
