Self-Guided Walking Holidays Mallorca

   Overview
 Mallorca  8 Days / 7 Nights  Grade B/C: Trails / Mountains

Most of us associate Mallorca with sun holidays - but away from the playas and the tourist traps lies a rich interior waiting to be discovered by the avid walker. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range forms the limestone centre of the island and offers a variety of interesting (and sometimes challenging) walks.

You can walk from mountain village to quiet Mediterranean cove. You can hike along coastal cliffs or up through mountain gorges. You can visit vast private estates with orange, almond and olive trees or stroll above idyllic white beaches. And all of this with the benefit of a Mediterranean climate!

Your accommodation on this tour is a mix of hotels, bed and breakfasts and two agroturismos - traditional Mallorquin farmhouses (one of which has a 13th century tower, previously used as a hideaway during pirate attacks).
Mallorca has so much to offer the walker, the only question is why have you not visited before?

Day 1 (Arrival)
Arrive in our base in the town of Valldemossa, home to Carthusian monastery around which the town is built. The town of Valldemossa can be easily reached by public bus from Palma de Mallorca.

Day 2 (16km Valldemossa Circular)
This is an easy day walk to get your legs under you. You follow the horse-riding trail of Archduke Ludwig Salvador which provides you wonderful views over the Mediterranean Sea along the way. If you are feeling energetic there is the option to extend the walk with an ascent to Es Teix peak (at 1062m).

Day 3 (16km Deia to Puerto Soller)
A short transfer brings you to artists colony of Deia where you start to walk along the coastline. You walk through an ancient Mediterranean woodland of oak, pine and the 'Strawberry Tree' or madrone. You continue on the trail through private orange estates as you head on to the coastal town of Puerto Soller and its famous old tramway.

Day 4 (17km Puerto Soller to Cala Tuent)
After a short transfer by tram to Soller you enjoy a walk today through the hills of the Serra de Tramuntana range. Today therefore provides you with the opportunity in the morning to enjoy the rugged (and quieter) Mediterranean coast here in western Mallorca or to visit the old town centre of Soller and shop for Mallorquin delicacies. Heading off on your walk ascends gradually through citrus trees and into the hills and the rural hamlet of Balitx d'Avall. You continue down to follow the coastline and on to Cala Tuent, a summer village with a picturesque beach.

Mallorca_34Day 5 (7.5km Soller Circular)
From the port of Soller, you have a steep ascent to the cliffs which form a natural breakwater overlooking the bay. From the cliffs you have lovely views from the old watchtower (Torre Picada) along the rocky coastline to the tiny island of S'Illeta. From your highpoint, you then have a steep descent along a ravine to reach teh promontory at Sa Punta Llarga.

Day 6 (13km Biniaraix to Orient)
You head off this morning along the 'orange valley' and head deep into the Serra de Tramuntana. Today's walk involves a fair amount of ascent and leads you right across the Tramuntana range. Heading up along part of the GR221 you pass the Torrent d'Almedra on your way to the col before descending to Orient's hidden and lush valley - home to some of the best apples and cherries on the island.

Day 7 (12km Orient)
Our final day's walking brings you to the centre of the island - atop the impressive Alaró mountain (822m) where you are rewarded with magnificent views over Mallorca as far as the Palma and Alcúdia bays. It is also the location of the Alaró castle - an ancient fortification dating back to the Moors. You return to our base for the evening.
