Self-Guided Walking Holidays Cumbria Way

   Overview
 Cumbrian Way  8 Days / 7 Nights  Grade C: Hills/Mountains
The Cumbrian Way offers you a route through the heart of the Lake District National Park from South to North. It is not one that brings you over the more challenging fells and peaks of the Lake District but instead follows the pack horse trails, passes and valleys to traverse this famous landscape. Combined with our day over The Old Man of Coniston this is a wonderful introduction to the beauty of The Lakes.

Trek-Inn Holiday's Cumbria Way route gives you a variety of different walking experiences - from the farmland around Ulverston to the tarns and lakes of the lower hills, the still beauty of Conistion Water and Tarn Hows to the craggy splendour of the Old Man of Conistion and Stake Pass. Added to this are the legendary beauty of Langdale and Borrowdale valleys, the bustling Lake District towns of Consiton and Keswick before you skirt past Skiddaw on your way over the more remote hills on the way to Caldbeck.

Loved by poets, ramblers and casual visitors alike, the English Lake District is rightly known around the world for the legendary beauty of its landscapes. But don't just trust to images on postcards and calendars - experience this raw beauty for yourself, but please remember to pack your camera!

   Itinerary
The Great Langdales

Day 1 (Arrival)
Arrive at the historic market town of Ulverston situated close to the shores of Morecambe Bay. Take a walk along the coastline, stroll through the town or just relax in a local hostelry before dinner this evening.

Day 2 (16km/10 miles Ulverston to Coniston)
You can elect to start from Ulverston this morning or to take our short transfer along the quiet trail that is the Cumbria Way. On this, your first day, you enjoy a walk which climbs quite gradually through farmland before passing through craggy moorland around Beacon Tarn. You then descend to walk on wooded trails along the quiet shoreline of Coniston Water to the beautiful town of Coniston itself.

Day 3 (12km/7.5 miles The Old Man of Coniston)
Today is a lovely circular walk which climbs one of Lakeland's famous peaks. The Old Man of Coniston however is an easy trek by Lake District standards - offering no major challenges. The paths up are well defined and you never have to resort to scrambling. What it lacks in technical difficulty it more than makes up for in panoramic views of Coniston Water, the Langdale Pikes and the Scafell range. An easy return by Low Water brings you back down to Coniston again for your second night in this famed Lakeland town.

On the way up to The Old Man of ConistonDay 4 (17.75km/11 miles Coniston to Great Langdale
Today's section includes Tarn Hows - one of Lakeland’s most famous unspoilt beauty spots. Starting from Coniston you pass through a wonderful mix of rolling farmland, woodland, fells and becks. Continuing on from Tarn Hows you also pass the lovely Elter Water and the small village of Elterwater as you turn to enter Great Langdale - an impressive U-shaped glacial valley with the dramatic summits of the Langdale Pikes looming around its peaceful valley floor.

Day 5 (16km/10 miles Langdale to Borrowdale
Today is a complete change from yesterday's walk as you experience the rugged splendour of the lakes. Rising steeply from the valley floor in Langdale you head up to Stake Pass with splendid views of the peaks of the Langdale Pikes and Crinkle Crags. Passing over the Stake Pass watershed, the Cumbria Way then follows the tumbling waters of Langstrath Beck as it and you head down to the River Derwent and sleepy Borrowdale.

Day 6 (19km/12 miles Borrowdale to Keswick)
Today you strike off the Cumbria Way to follow a lovely route from Borrowdale up via High Scawdel and then Dale Head to walk the splendid Littledale Edge with fantastic views down to Buttermere and across to Honister Crag, Grey Knotts and Hay Stacks. You then turn away from Buttermere to head down the Derwent Fells via Robinson and High Snab Bank down to the valley at Little Town. An easy walk under Cat Bells brings you down to Derwent Bank and into Keswick on the edge of Derwent Water.

Day 7 (20km/12.5 miles Keswick to Caldbeck)
On your last day of walking you once again experience a different side of the Lake District. Still accompanied by tumbling becks you walk over rough and windswept moorland beneath the shadow of imposing Skiddaw and Blencathra. You continue to follow the Cumbria Way down under Bowscale Fell before turning to head over High Pike and the Caldbeck Fells before dropping down to Caldbeck itself. Here you are met by our transport and transferred to the town of Carlisle and the end of your journey.
